The Secret History of Drone Warfare

Here is a high-level overview of the major time periods in the history and evolution of drone usage in international warfare and conflicts:

Pre Classic Era (1900 — 1990)

First of all, drones have been extensively developed mainly in order to make a reconnaissance and surveillance in various wars such as WW1, WW2, the Vietnam War, etc. Their capacity was restricted and they were without weapons at this stage.

Post-9/11 Wars’ meaning wars that began after the September 11 attacks (2001 till present).

Armed drones equipped with missiles and bombs are being increasingly used to fight wars, since the introduction of the ‘war on terror’ following America’s attack on September 11th 2001, and in particular on Afghanistan and Iraq. It fell prey to criticism of its losses of innocent lives and was good for targeting terrorists in pinpoint missions.

(A Late 2000s — Present) Expansion and Proliferation
