The dressing in red and green during Christmas is something that people have engage in for centuries. It is a bright and rash color combination that effectively conveys the atmosphere of the New Year and the Christmas. But I have asked myself many time what makes these colors so special that they belong to the Christmas and are used time after time. In this blogpost, my discussion will focus on the religious, historical and the cultural usage of the of red and green color during the Christmas period.

Christian Religious Symbols

One of the main reason for the use of red and green at Christmas is that the two colors are associated so closely with Christian religious imagery. The colour red is symbolic for the blood of the Christ through shedding of which He redeemed mankind from their sins. It is also characteristic of affection, expectation and happiness — in essence the true meaning of Christmas.

On the other hand we have green which associated with the tree element of earth and representing eternal life. Needless to say that evergreens were always considered as symbols of life and strength of life even in the most severe warm months of the year which, in its turn emphasizes the…
